Achievements and Challenges
he project was very well-received and was nominated by the lecturers for the Lee Hsien Loong Award. 2 other teammates and I were given the honor of giving a formal presentation to the judges from the Ministry of Education to explain the application and its purpose. The tough part was explaining the technology to people who were not tech-savvy and were more traditional in thinking. Nonetheless, it was a good experience.
The project was awarded finalist in the 2019 Rookie Awards Game of the Year - Interactive Media.
None of my teammates had any experience with augmented reality so it took some time to set up the project and debug. We had to rely on research and our lecturer mentor's knowledge to guide us while we met the needs and wants of our clients (SIDM staff).
My team took turns representing SIDM as ambassadors at the 2019 Nanyang Polytechnic Open House to promote the school. It was a step out of my comfort zone since I was not used to explaining our lifestyle and curriculum to parents and potential students. However, thanks to my previous experience as a National Education Ambassador back in secondary school, I had the confidence to invoke the curiosity and interest of visitors.
Designing the Mechanics
Since our aim is to educate potential students and parents about our daily school life at SIDM, we wanted to base the experience on that theme. Most of the concept had already been decided by our predecessors who worked on the project to promote the course: Game Development & Technology (GDT).
We had the idea of creating an arcade environment due to the nature of the course we were tasked on promoting: Digital Game Art and Design (DGAD). So instead of the forest cottage our predecessors created, we went with a more cool and stylish vibe.
The personal process of receiving assignments, working on assignments, and then submitting it, was what gave us inspiration for how the player would go through when playing the mini game. You would battle distractions in the form of red floating things such as flying beds and stress all the while diverting your energy to work on your assignment.
Because we wanted to give our users information on what to expect from studying DGAD, we added interactable elements not only to populate the scene but also provide useful facts about the course. We made certain elements more eye-catching to draw the users attention to what they could interact with. There is also some animation in the background so that the scene would look more lively even without any user interactions.
